Sunup to Sundown

I was finally given a job to do in my career in the Army and it is defiantly impacting my running and workout schedule.

The truth is you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed.

Life has gotten crazy in the past few days, I went from sitting around an office doing absolutely nothing to being in charge of 23 soldiers and their day-to-day lives. Days have gone from a lazy 8 hour work day to one that is (so-far) 12 -13 hours long. Most days now begin with me waking up at 0500 and end with me leaving for home at 1800 and according to some of my peers I have talked with they are about to get longer. I do like what I am doing, but this is really really messing with my running schedule.

You see, I really like running when the sun is up (its much safer too). But since I now work all day, I don’t go get to run when the sun is up anymore, except on weekends. I know this is a problem many runners have adapted to and overcome, but It is hard to adjust and set a schedule when you really don’t know what tomorrow will bring. I am hoping to get settled in soon and adapt to running in the dark because I have a race in 1 month.

One of the best pieces of advice I got in relationship to being an officer what that I have to take care of my self to take care of my soldiers. Establishing a routine is part of the process of taking care of myself. On the other hand, I think in any sort of mass changing event, like a new job or moving somewhere new, establishing a new routine can be one of the hardest things to do. I need set a workout

schedule and work on keeping it so I can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy so I can take care of my soldiers. I will have to learn to adapt it as needed when situations arise.

I also feel that now my job is no longer just running, as it was in college. (I know this sounds like athletics came first in college, but I found academics not to be that challenging if I paid attention in class. Because of the ease of academics, running became my main focus in college. I didn’t have it easy either, I got a degree in Civil Engineering with a 3.4 GPA.)  I am going to have to learn to use running and working out as an escape from my job. Maybe this will help me re-find my love of running.

That is my ultimate goal, is it not, to re-find my love for the sport that I dedicated nine years of my life to.

I miss the grind

I really can’t believe I quoted Eminem…
